Featured Collection ~ Montreal collector of Walter Schluep & Hans Gehrig

Each month or so, we bring together various pieces from across our website to feature them together as a group.

We’re excited to have the privilege and pleasure of presenting a wonderful collection of jewellery by Canadian greats Walter Schluep and Hans Gehrig. These pieces (along with a couple of unsigned pieces from the same collection) were originally purchased in the 1970s and ‘80s by a collector from Ottawa (Barb) who enjoyed traveling to Montreal to shop in person at the ateliers of these designers.

From her niece: She developed a long-time personal relationship with both of them [Gehrig & Schluep]. The collection has been in storage since Barb’s passing in 1990. She was a collector of Scandinavian-designed, teak, mid-century-modern furniture. She also collected art works, mostly abstract and many by Canadian artists, including paintings by Gerald Trottier and William Perehudoff. She was a lover of beautiful, unique art whether jewelry, fine art or furniture. I remember she had impeccable taste and took delight in investing in items that were truly one-of-a-kind.

The pieces collectively show Schluep and Gehrig’s great range in style and techniques, and many stand as marvellous little sculptures in their own right. They’re all exquisitely well made and most of them come in their original boxes or suede pouches.

Several pieces are enormous (extraordinary) in scale, so please do have a look at the final images in each listing to see what they look like in hand.

Enjoy!
